Before part 2, the delivery

June 27, 2014
Baraga

RUM Steve and ARUS Tammy are in the parking lot, eager to meet Baraga's newest puppies. FLDs Eco and Farley oblige, yawning with sweet puppy breath.

A man wearing glasses and a black jacket is holding a small black lab in his arms. The man is smiling at the camera. The puppy is yawning with his mouth wide open and his eyes closed. There are trees in the background out of focus.
FLD Eco gives a big yawn.
A woman wearing glasses and short hair, wearing a blue jacket is holding a small yellow lab in her arms. She is smiling at the camera and the puppy is looking at the camera too.
FLD Farley looks at the camera.

In the room where we are to have our training session, the men are sitting in chairs against the walls, organized by team. The two inmate raisers waiting for their new puppies sit next to each other in chairs in the middle of the room. Their backs face the door. Everyone but these two men can see the black and yellow fur balls arrive. "Awwwwws" ripple around the room.

Tammy follows a tradition started in the Iowa prison puppy-raising program. She hands FLD Eco over the shoulder of his primary raiser, Nico, and gives him time to savor the moment.

Then Tammy lifts FLD Farley over the shoulder of his primary raiser, Steve. Everyone applauds the new arrivals.

A close up shot of a man holding a small yellow lab puppy in his arms. The puppy is facing the camera with his head pressed against the man's right cheek. The man is wearing the blue and orange prison shirt and his left hand is embracing the puppy's neck and shoulder.
Inmate raiser Steve gives his new charge, FLD Farley, a big squeeze.

The men are quick to introduce FLDs Eco and Farley to their teams and the rest of the group.

Two men dressed in the blue prison uniforms stand on either side of a small yellow lab puppy. The man on the right is holding the puppy up under his chest. The puppy is looking at the camera (and the men are too) and has a leash attached to his collar. The man on the left is holding the blue Future Leader Dog bandana that has been embroidered with his name, "Farley."
Steve (left) and teammate Paul (right) hold FLD Farley up next to his embroidered Future Leader Dog bandana.

A man dressed in the blue prison uniform stands on the left side, facing three men who are sitting down on chairs along a white brick wall on the right. The first man on the right is looking to the middle man, who is cradling a small white lab puppy in his arms. The puppy is facing away from the camera, but the middle man, an african american, is smiling at the camera. The third man in the background looks on.
Steve's teammate Brown (center) cradles FLD Farley as Paul looks on. In the background is Jim, who is not on a team but has volunteered to help clean up and do whatever he can to help the program.

An african american man dressed in a blue prison shirt is pressing his face against a small yellow lab puppy that he is holding with his right arm. The man is facing the right, and he has a contented smile. The puppy is also facing right with its left paw hanging over the man's forearm.
Brown and FLD Farley share a snuggle.

Two men dressed in blue prison uniforms sit with a small black lab puppy. The man on the left is holding the puppy in his left hand against his chest. With his right hand he is holding the blue Future Leader Dog bandana that is embroidered with the puppy's name, Eco. A brown leash is hanging down from the puppy's collar and is held by the man on the right with his left hand. This man's right hand is draped over his left forearm. The man on the right is wearing glasses and is looking toward the puppy. The man on the left is also looking at the puppy. The puppy is the only one looking at the camera!
James (left) and Jerad (right), puppy-raising teammates of Nico, get their chance to hold FLD Eco and show off his new bandana.
